Narrowing down a field of a few thousand pastels to a collection of only 100 of the most exceptional is no small feat, but it’s a task that the jurors for the 17th Annual Pastel 100 competition took on with great care and enthusiasm. Our jury included five distinguished artists: Terri Ford for the Landscape & Interior category; Mike Beeman for Animal & Wildlife; Robert K. Carsten for Still Life & Floral; Mario A. Robinson for Portrait & Figure; and Barbara Benedetti Newton for Abstract & Non-Objective. You’ll find some examples of their inspiring work below. And, in the April 2016 of Pastel Journal, on sale here, you can read all about how these artists approached the challenging task of evaluation and discover their overall impressions of this year’s Pastel 100 entries. Their generous responses offer plenty of insight and illumination.
