Alan Larkin’s painting, Time Piece, shown below, is the winner of this year’s Pastel Journal Founder’s Award (in memory of Maggie Price) in the 17th Annual Pastel 100 competition. The piece presents a magical assemblage of objects, painted in a tall, narrow format, which encourages a unique perspective and exploration. Robert K. Carsten, the Still Life & Floral category juror, says of the work: “I find the slender, vertical format and cropping of shapes in this painting intriguing. The artist’s selection and placement of elements—combined with contrasts of saturated colors, which are set off by darks and a few select lights—evoke a strong sense of mystery.”
