Pastel Pick of the Week | Hayes Named Pastel Society UK President

Pastel Journal congratulates Jeannette Hayes, who has been named the new president of The Pastel Society UK, following Cheryl Culver‘s successful tenure. Both will be remembered by long-standing readers of Pastel Journal: Hayes judged the Abstract and Non-Objective category in the 15th Annual Pastel 100 competition and also was profiled in the December 2007 issue of Pastel Journal. She paints colorful abstract landscapes based on her emotional response to her surroundings. Culver is known for her poetic landscapes and was featured in the December 2008 issue of Pastel Journal.

The society’s council hosted a buffet lunch at the Mall Galleries, in London, on July 5th at which the chain of office was handed over. There was a presentation to Culver in appreciation of her work for the society over the past four years, which has included negotiating valuable sponsorship from Caran d’Ache and Derwent Pencils, as well as developing the society’s website and establishing its presence on social media. Culver is stepping down from her role to devote more time to her painting.

Hayes says, “I’m a little nervous, but also very proud to be succeeding Cheryl. The society is over 100 years old, but under Cheryl and other recent presidents, it has developed a real momentum which I hope to maintain. Fortunately, I have the support of some amazing colleagues.”—Ken Gofton
