Pastel Pick of the Week | Pure Color: Pastels From the Cleveland Museum of Art

The Cavaliers and Indians (and, OK, the Browns) aren’t the only must-see attractions to be found in Cleveland. Pure Color: Pastels From the Cleveland Museum of Art, which celebrates pastels made from the second half of the 19th century to the early 20th century, kicks off its season November 19 and runs through March 19, 2017, at the Cleveland Museum of Art.

The exhibition highlights a remarkably creative period of richness, diversity and experimentation in the use of the medium. During this time, works on paper were increasingly valued, collected and exhibited as works of art in their own right. In response to this trend, the Société des Pastellistes de France was created in 1885 to promote the work of artists working in pastel; the first exhibition dedicated to the medium was held in Paris that same year.

Exhibition heavy hitters include Jean-François Millet (French, 1814-1875), Edgar Degas (French, 1834-1917), Odilon Redon (French, 1840-1916), Mary Cassatt (American, 1844-1926), Léon Augustin Lhermitte (French, 1844-1925), Claude-Émile Schuffenecker (French, 1851-1934), Otto Freundlich (German, 1878-1943) and Gino Severini (Italian, 1883-1966).

Go, Cleveland!
