Pastel Pick of the Week | Rhoda Yanow Named to PSA Hall of Fame

The Pastel Society of America (PSA) has announced the names of the honorees who will be celebrated this fall, during the 44th Annual Juried Exhibition, “Enduring Brilliance.” These are people who have contributed significantly to the pastel community by providing inspiration, leadership, energy or guidance—or all of the above. Thanks to PSA presdient Jimmy Wright for the following information. And congratulations to the following honorees:

Hall of Fame: Rhoda Yanow

No. 5 (pastel) by Rhoda Yanow, 2016 inductee into the Pastel Society of America’s Hall of Fame

The newest inductee into the prestigious Pastel Hall of Fame will be Rhoda Yanow, a founding member of PSA, a life member, a board member from 1975 to 2008, a former PSA vice-president, and a Master Pastelist since 1979. A dedicated teacher, Yanow has taught at the DuCret School of Arts, the Newark Museum, The Visual Arts Center of New Jersey, and at the PSA School for Pastels. The award-winning artist trained at Parsons School of Design and the National Academy of Design, and her work has been shown in such notable venues as the Butler Institute of American Art in Ohio and the Noyes Museum in New Jersey. Friend of Pastel: Bob Strohsahl
Strohsahl is the the founder and president of Great American Art Works, a manufacturer of handmade soft pastels in Cincinnati, and a generous supporter of the PSA Annual. His Great American Art Works Award of the “Full Monty “set of 468 pastels remains the most valuable material award in the annual. He has also donated hardware and designed a program to assist the PSA in managing its data and records.

Friend of Pastel: Maceo Mitchell
Serving on the PSA Board of Governors since 2004, Maceo Mitchell was appointed Director of the PSA School for Pastels in 2006. Under his dedicated leadership, the school has experienced a program revival that includes a lively mix of classes and workshops. Mitchell received a B.F.A. from Wayne University and an M.F.A. at the University of Iowa while studying under master printmaker Mauricio Lasansky. A former college art professor, Mitchell is an exhibiting New York artist with a passion for pastel and teaching. A feature on his work appeared in the February 2010 issue of Pastel Journal. Juror of Awards: Mark D. Mitchell
Mark D. Mitchell, the Holcombe T. Green Curator of American Paintings and Sculpture, at the Yale University Art Gallery, has been given the task of awarding $30,000 worth of honors in this year’s PSA Annual. Mitchell has held curatorial positions at the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the National Academy Museum, New York; and the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire. He has organized exhibitions on artists George Inness, Francis Silva and James Suydam, and is currently curating a landmark survey of still life: “Audubon to Warhol: The Art of American Still Life.” Mitchell received his doctorate in American art from Princeton University after completing undergraduate work at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. The selection jurors for the show include master pastelists Judith Cutler, of North Caroline; Richard McKinley, of Oregon; and Jimmy Wright, of New York City.

Demonstrator: Anna Wainright
On Saturday, October 1, from 1-3:30 pm, master pastelist Anna Wainright will conduct a pastel painting demonstration for visitors to the PSA weekend event at the National Arts Club. Wainright, featured in the February 2016 issue of Pastel Journal (on sale here), will paint a landscape scene, demonstrating the choices she makes in depicting atmosphere, mood and shadow, elements that aid in her expression of the memory and experience of place.
